Jamestown Culture Fest (click to enlarge)Wherever you travel throughout South Central North Dakota, you'll find local folks celebrating and honoring their heritage in many ways. You can schedule your visit to our part of the state around Sauerkraut Day in Wishek each October, PastaFest in Carrington each July or Tatanka Days in Jamestown each July also.

Pioneer Kitchen (click to enlarge)Heritage plays a vital role in every city in South Central North Dakota. It makes each community the unique place it is, and visitors can easily get swept up in the fun and activity as these towns celebrate the "good old days" at numerous festivals across the region.

America was settled by a diverse group of immigrants, and North Dakota eventually became home to families of Scandinavian, German Russian, Ukrainian and Icelandic heritage--all steeped in the richest of traditions dating back centuries. These noble, hard-working and deeply religious people built our communities--physically, spiritually and culturally. Today, it's a rare and historic treat to stumble upon an iron cross cemetery honoring the deceased loved ones of a century ago, take note of how the architecture of a grand two-story home in a small town tells a story about its first owner, or overhear locals conversing in their native language throughout the region.

Rosebud Visitor CenterCulture and heritage may be the region's premiere attraction. Many travelers long to experience just a glimpse of what may be their own ancestry by spending hours browsing through one of the many fascinating local museums that dot the region. Others want to create their own vision of the past by enjoying ethnic foods or maybe by participating in a local festival or celebration.

However you choose to experience South Central North Dakota, know that as you travel the highways that course through the region, history abounds...maybe your heritage...maybe someone else's. Either way, you will surely come away with a better appreciation and understanding of the pioneers who found this land and made it their own.
